The Cliffs is a level I made designed as a speed test, to see what I could create in the frame of 48 hours. The level editor used was designed with Far Cry 2. This editor is extremely simple to use, which gave me as the level designer a better ability to focus my time on the design of the level, and how to make an effective Capture the Flag map. This is also aided by there being plenty of assets available for creating different styles of games.
I wanted to design a level for the game mode capture the flag, or in Far Cry 2, capture the diamonds. In this, I wanted to make a level that allowed all types of gamers bring their own style of play to the game mode. If they wanted to be tactical about getting the flag, they would need to use all their cunning to find the best opening. If the player preferred the shoot first ask questions later technique, then the map was extremely well suited to an all out brawl.
The level itself is quite small, but it accommodates for a large set of players due to the way it makes use of the space. Some players will be looking for vantage points, holding down turrets, or waiting for the best moment to capture, while others may just try to blast their way through. The bases in the level are quite close together, which helps to create a fast pace to the game. However, the way the game can be played out can make the journey back be a real gratifying task.
The visual style of the level takes a Savannah Wasteland feel. I tried to be very simplistic in terms of visual feel, with the atmosphere to be conveyed one of desperation and harshness, to push forward the idea of winner takes all. The visual feel also helps to keep players clear on their target without many distractions, allowing them to look further at the design of the level to where they can get the best vantage points and strategic openings.
